No brainer for Lyons who re-signs with the Drogs

Striker Chris Lyons has extended his stay with Drogheda United as the club announced on Wednesday the signing of the player for the 2020 season.

"I’m delighted to have signed a new deal,” said Lyons who scored 14 goals for United this season as they finished runners up in the First Division.

The forward began his League of Ireland career at UCD in 2011, before spells with Bohs, Shamrock Rovers B, Bray Wanderers, Sligo Rovers and Shelbourne.

However he has found his home with Drogheda United since 2018 and will be hoping to be playing his football in the Premier Division next season if things go well in the upcoming playoffs.

“It has been a great two years for myself, the most enjoyable and happy I’ve ever been playing football. It was a no brainer when Tim (Clancy) came and had a chat about signing.

“It’s nice to have my deal done early and to be staying with the club but we have a massive game Friday in the play offs and I'm really looking forward to it!”

The winner of the Drogheda United / Cabinteely tie, which has its first leg set for Stradbook on Friday, will almost certainly face Finn Harps in the promotion/relegation final later in October.

“I really love the dressing room we have and the people around the club are really great people.

“I’ve loved the last two years. It’s a great club & I’m delighted that I’ll be here for my third season."
