Maciej Tarnogrodzki: 'Anything can happen in football and we still have a chance'

Andrew Dempsey reports from the UCD Bowl

UCD boss Maciej Tarnogrodzki has refused to give up hope of an unlikely survival attempt following his side’s 2-0 defeat at home to Sligo Rovers on Friday evening.

Tarnogrodzki told reports after the game; “You need to believe until the end. Anything can happen in football and we still have a chance going up to Donegal.

The result is very bad. I think, on the balance of play, I don’t we got what we deserved in the end. We created enough and had enough of the ball to do something with it in the second half especially.

“We didn’t show enough quality finishing and cutting edge to get back into the game. Maybe if we scored with twenty minutes to go in the second half, we might have had a chance, but it didn’t happen.”

The former Bray Wanderers caretaker boss also added his views on the goals conceded by a leaky UCD back line.

“(The goal before the break) It was a killer blow. It was disappointing for us to concede that goal because we pushed them, and they defended very deep in the box and that was a killer mistake for us.

“You don’t do those things – passing the ball into crowded spaces – they got the ball and countered and that was it.

“It was unfortunate for Conor (with his mistake). He is disappointed with himself.

“The player from Sligo didn’t even know he scored because he had his back to our goal and Conor will be disappointed with that, no question about it.”
