Conor Keeley: 'The high standards from training has been brought into the games and that's why we've been getting such good results'

Cabinteely’s Conor Keeley admits that the high standards set on the training ground for Cabo have played a pivotal role in seeing them achieve an unlikely playoff berth.

The Green and White’s were widely tipped to struggle this term, and despite many writing Pat Devlin’s side off throughout – Cabinteely have secured a playoff spot for the first time in their League of Ireland history.

Speaking on this week’s Extratime.ie Sportscast, Keeley spoke about the high standard set in training that has in turn, fine tuned performances on the pitch.

“Everyone would have thought that we would have fallen away,” the 21 year old admits.  

“But we set really high standards in our dressing room. Nobody has low standards and we keep pushing ourselves.

“Everyone gets on well with each other. There’s no arguments in there. Fair enough, we might have a rattle off each other during training but that’s what you want in training.

“The high standards from training has been brought into the games and that’s why we’ve been getting such good results – since July we’ve only lost one game.”

While Cano have overachieved on the pitch, manager Devlin raised questions whether they are underachieving off it in recent days – a sentiment echoed by the former Shelbourne youngster.  

“The club has only been in the league a couple of years so you’re not going to be getting too much support at the games.

“That’s just the facts and you have to live with that. Sometimes you’d love to be playing in front of the big crowds that the sides in the Premier Division have but you have to be realistic.



“It’s not going to happen this early into the club’s history. It is what it is and it’s unfortunate, but we have to get and live with it.

“We’d all love to get a thousand or so at our home games, but we have to be realistic about it.”
