Watch: Jack Byrne underlines international credentials with two spectacular goals in Waterford

Jack Byrne continues to press his case for a permanent place in the Republic of Ireland squad with a pair of spectacular strikes in front of the TV cameras in Waterford.

The game against third-from-bottom Waterford had all the hallmarks of a banana skin for Rovers following a hard-fought win away to Derry City on Friday night.

Byrne ensured a handy 2-0 cushion for Stephen Bradley’s side at the break, however, as he buried two strikes from outside the box just five minutes apart.

The opening goal saw the midfielder build the play from deep before collecting the ball once more and dropping a shoulder past Shane Duggan to shoot.

Goalkeeper Matthew Connor managed to get a fingertip to the Dubliner’s dipping shot but it wasn’t enough as the ball cracked the back of the net.

Just five minutes later, Byrne was at it again and the second strike was arguably superior to the first, leaving, as it did, Connor with absolutely no chance.

Ronan Finn picked the ball up on the right wing and drove infield before picking out Byrne, who still had an awful lot to do.

The former Manchester City trainee showed good balance to shrug off Tom Holland before smashing a perfectly-struck effort over the despairing Connor and into the net.
