David Forde announces retirement from football

Former Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper David Forde has announced his retirement from football.

Forde, once of Galway United and Derry City, made 24 appearances for the Boys in Green, with his debut coming in 2013.

On his debut, the then 33-year-old secured a clean sheet and in turn became the oldest player to make a senior competitive debut for the Republic of Ireland.

“The time has come to lay down my gloves for the last time,” Forde revealed on Twitter on Tuesday morning.

“I have been truly blessed. To receive the honour and privilege to wear the crests and colours of incredible teams.

“The time has come to lay down my gloves for the last time. I have been truly blessed.

The Galwegian spent the last two seasons with League Two Cambridge United with his last game coming in January 2019.

Most well known for his spell at Millwall, the 24-time Irish international also played for Barry Town of the Welsh Premier League, Barnet, Cardiff City, Luton Town, Bournemouth and Portsmouth.
