Josh Honohan signs first professional contract with Cork City

Cork City have announced the singing of Josh Honohan to his first professional contract with the club.

Honohan is a graduate of Cork City’s underage system having signed to play for their U17 side in 2018 from local club Carrigaline United.

The defender progressed to the U19 side this season, having been named as The Rebels U17 player of the year for 2018.

The 18 year old has been awarded a first team contract with the club just weeks after appearing for John Cotter’s side in a mid-season friendly 2-0 loss to Preston North End last month.

“It’s a great honour to sign a professional contract, especially here, which is the right place for me to develop and improve,” Honohan said, speaking to the club’s website.

“I have been in training with the first team recently and I have settled in well, the lads have been very good to me. There is a step-up in terms of intensity, but there is no better place to develop.

“A lot of players have come from the academy teams into the first team squad, so it shows that you can get the chance to get into the first team.”

Cork City take on St Patrick’s Athletic tomorrow night at Turner’s Cross in the Premier Division (kick off 8pm).
