Northern Irish international Gavin Whyte joins Cardiff City from League One Oxford United

Cardiff City have unveiled the capture of Northern Ireland international winger Gavin Whyte from League One Oxford United.

The 23-year-old will test his mettle in the Sky Bet Championship with the recently relegated Bluebirds as he makes the step up from League One side Oxford United for an undisclosed fee.

He made 36 appearances in League One last season for Oxford, scoring seven goals after signing for the U’s from NIFL Premiership side Crusaders ahead of the 2018/2019 season.

Shortly after moving to England he made his debut for the Northern Ireland senior team against Israel last September, nabbing his first international goal in the process as the side ran out 3-0 winners in Windsor Park.

Whyte also featured in the 3 International Friendly against the Republic of Ireland in November 2018, where both sides played out an insipid scoreless draw.

“I’m delighted, when I first heard about the move, I couldn’t wait to come here,” he said, speaking to the Cardiff City’s website.

“I give 100%, I’m a hard worker, I’m positive and I like to take players on. I can’t wait to get the kit on, play as many games as I can and help this club to be where they need to be.”

The English Championship begins this weekend and, pending international clearance, Whyte could feature in Cardiff’s first game when they travel to face Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium (kick off 3pm).
