League Preview: Longford Town -v- Wexford

LONGFORD TOWN

Longford Town are one of three sides who could end the day on top of the First Division table as they welcome bottom-placed Wexford to City Calling Stadium (kick-off 7.30pm).

Neale Fenn’s side hold a slight ace card as they will be the last of the three sides (Shelbourne and Drogheda United are the others) to line out.

Shels face a tough trip to Bray Wanderers in the three o’clock kick-off while Drogheda welcome Athlone Town to United Park at 5pm.

It’s been a mixed week for Fenn’s side as they were narrowly beaten by league leaders Shelbourne on Friday before bouncing back with a 2-1 win over Galway United on Monday.

Goals inside the first quarter from Dean Byrne and Sam Verdon were enough to propel the midlands side to second despite Shane Doherty pulling one back in the second half.

Longford have not provided any team news and the league have not issued a suspensions list.

WEXFORD

Wexford head to City Calling Stadium looking to arrest a run of five games without a league win.

That run, continued by a 2-1 home defeat to Drogheda United last Friday, leaves Brian O’Sullivan’s side three points adrift at the bottom of the table.

Danny Furlong opened the scoring against Drogs with his fifth goal of the season, but strikes from Luke McNally and Jake Hyland turned the tie on its head.

Furlong will not be available for the trip to Longford after picking up an injury in training, while Paddy Cahill is suspended.

Sean Callan returns from a one-game ban, however, while new signings Conor Sutton, Ricky Fox and John Peare are all in line to feature.

Referee: Kevin O'Sullivan

MATCH STATS

The first meeting between the sides at Ferrycarrig Park in April saw Longford continue their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 win.

Danny Furlong’s first goal of the season put Wexford in front, but goals from Sam Verdon and Peter Hopkins saw Neale Fenn’s side to victory.

Wexford’s league record against Longford since returning to the First Division makes for poor reading, with seven defeats and one draw from eight meetings.

Longford Town 1/5; Draw 9/2; Wexford 17/2.
