Liam Scales: 'Exams take their toll but it's just the way it is at UCD'

It was another defeat for UCD on Friday evening as they fell to a one goal defeat at home to Shamrock Rovers at the UCD Bowl.

Dan Carr’s first half effort from close range proved decisive for the Hoops, who stay level on points with Dundalk.

Speaking after the game, UCD defender Liam Scales felt that his side were unfortunate to come away from the Dublin Derby defeat to Shamrock Rovers with anything to show.

“I thought we did well and quite unlucky with the result in the end,” the Republic of Ireland under-21 defender told extratime.ie.

“It was an even game and it could have gone either way, I thought we might have deserved a little bit more.

“Saying that, it’s an improvement from the last few weeks, exams are over so it’s looking up I suppose.”

Friday night also saw the Students alter their tactical shape somewhat with a defensive three coming in place of the usual four, something that helped the Students’ performance according to Scales.

“I think I was needed because we had a few bad results and performances, so it was good to mix it up a bit.

“It gives us [as defenders] an opportunity to create more things and I thought we were a lot more solid defensively tonight as well, so it was good.”

With exams now completed, the impressive young defender believes that UCD can push on from here on in, starting on Monday evening at home to Cork City.

“It [exams] takes its toll but it’s just the way it is at UCD. You just have to get up and get on with it. It is tough but we’re through it now so hopefully things will start to go a little bit better.

“I think we have a lot to learn from our game against Cork last week. We didn’t perform too well; we could’ve performed a lot better.

“We know where we need to improve and hopefully, we can take that into the game on Monday and get a better result.”
