Barrett treble sees Peamount move five points clear while Galway down Cork City in eight-goal thriller

Peamount United stretched their lead at the top of the Women’s National League to five points with a dominant 7-0 win over DLR Waves in Jackson Park on Saturday night.

Republic of Ireland striker Amber Barrett scored a 25-minute hat-trick and captain Aine O’Gorman notched two, while Eleanor Ryan Doyle and Deirbhaile Beirne were also on target.

O’Gorman opened the scoring against her former club midway through the first half before Barrett punished the home side with two goals in the three minutes leading up to half time.

Ryan Doyle netted the goal of the day early in the second half before Barrett completed her treble. O’Gorman added her second late on before Beirne completed the rout in added time.

Earlier in the day, second-placed Wexford Youths were held to a scoreless draw by Shelbourne at Frank Cooke Park – the first time the champions have failed to score this season.

The result leaves Wexford five points behind the Peas, who have won seven from seven so far, on 16 points, while Shels are a further two back on 14 points, albeit with a game in hand.

In Sunday’s only game, Galway leapfrogged Cork City into fourth place as they came out the right side of an eight-goal thriller in Bishopstown.

Danielle Burke gave City the lead within six minutes but they were almost instantly pegged back by Lynsey McKee.

Aoife Thompson scored the first of her two goals three minutes later, and Chloe Singleton made it 3-1 in the first minute of the second half.

Goals from Eabha O’Mahony and Christina Dring saw Cork level on the hour, but a penalty from Meabh De Burca put Galway back in front before Thompson made the points safe.



Barrett’s hat-trick moved her to eight goals for the campaign, one behind Wexford Youths sharpshooter Rianna Jarrett, while Aoife Thompson’s brace bring her to six goals.
