John Cotter appointed interim Cork City boss

Cork City have announced the appointment of John Cotter as interim First Team manager following the departure of John Caulfield yesterday.

Cotter joined the club firstly as a player during the 1996/1997 season and went on to have a successful playing career with the club winning both the FAI Cup and League Cup before making the move to Avondale United.

It was at Avondale United that Cotter played under John Caulfield as captain before eventually succeeding him as first team manager where he enjoyed great success.

Under his watchful eye, Avondale United went on to win the Munster Senior League title on two occasions as well as three consecutive FAI Intermediate Cups.

Cotter then re-joined Cork City as a first team coach and right hand man to Caulfield in 2014 shortly after Caulfield’s appointment as First Team manager and is currently undertaking the Pro License course.

“I’m delighted and honoured to take up this new interim role.” spoke Cotter shortly after the appointment.

“I’m looking forward to getting the head down now and trying to get the club back up the table as quickly as possible. We have an excellent team of backroom staff that can achieve that.”

It has also been announced that Alan Bennett and Colin Healy will come on board as part of Cotter’s management team immediately.

Both have been involved recently with the club’s academy with Healy currently head of the Academy at the club and current manager of the Under 19 side as well. It is understood he will remain in place with both of these roles as well as his new first team duties.

Cork City chairman Declan Carey spoke to the club website shortly after the appointment and is delighted to have all three on board and in place for Friday’s trip to face Bohemians.

“John Cotter is a very experienced coach and manager, with a long association with our club. He is highly respected both within the club and in the wider footballing community. He will take up the position on an interim basis, and the board will soon begin planning for our longer-term options for first team manager.”

“Both Alan and Colin are steeped in Cork City FC and have had highly successful playing careers, both here and further afield. Their experience, knowledge and passion for the club will be great additions to our First Team coaching staff, and I know they will both be a huge help to John Cotter over the coming weeks.”
