Robbie Williams returns to Limerick in expanded role

Recently-relegated Limerick have announced that defender Robbie Williams will return to the club as a player and coach following a brief spell with Galway United.

The club have also confirmed new deals for younsters Karl O’Sullivan and Aaron Fitzgerald for the coming 2019 season.

Williams returns to the Shannonsiders after a brief spell away from the club where the Englishman won a double with Limerick’s Munster rivals Cork City.

The former Blackpool centre-half endured a disappointing year at Éamonn Deacy Park as the Tribesmen failed to live up to their pre-season tag as title favourites, ultimately coming sixth.

Williams also joins his former club as a player coach where the 34-year-old will help out with the club’s under-19 side for the 2019 campaign.

“I’m delighted to have Robbie back in as a player coach and also in as a coach with the under-19s,” Blues manager Tommy Barrett told the club’s media team.

“He is a great asset both as a player and as a coach, with this being a natural move for him. Robbie holds his UEFA B and will be looking to progress up the ladder next year.”

O’Sullivan has signed a two-year contract after playing a major role in the first team last year.

At 19 years of age, the winger will be likely to play a pivotal role in any hope the Blues have of returning to the top-tier.

“It’s excellent to have Karl signed for the next two seasons,” said Barrett.

“He’s a really exciting player who did well in the premier division and will be looking to kick on this season”

Fitzgerald, a central midfielder by trade, is a local youngster and Barrett feels his versatility will help next season.

“Aaron has progressed well from last year,” he said.

“He is a committed young local player who, while predominately a centre-mid, can also play in the left back position where he featured against Waterford last year.”
