Thomas Byrne returns to Drogheda United

After a year away at St. Patrick’s Athletic, forward Thomas Byrne has returned to United Park to sign for Drogheda United.

Byrne first signed for Drogheda, then managed by Pete Mahon, in 2017 upon his return from England where he had played with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Byrne, who played with Albion Rovers, Drogheda Boys, Malahide United and St. Kevin’s Boys, spent two years at Brighton’s academy, largely playing with their U18 side.

Following his season with Drogheda, which saw them relegated to the First Division, he joined St. Patrick’s Athletic.

After overcoming an early injury setback, Byrne was a regular feature in the St. Pat’s squad through the season.

He scored four times in all competitions last season, including three in the league, against Sligo Rovers, Derry City and Bray Wanderers.

The signing of Byrne brings Tim Clancy’s squad to eleven players after Sean Brennan, Conor Kane, Chris Lyons, Paul Skinner, Kevin Farragher, Luke Gallagher, Mark Doyle and Jake Hyland all re-signed for the Boynesiders.

Clancy also added James Brown and Cian Kavanagh to Drogheda’s squad, signing the pair from Shelbourne.
