Former Rangers and Glentoran striker Nacho Novo suffers suspected heart attack during game

The former Glentoran and Rangers striker Nacho Novo is in a stable condition in hospital in Berlin after suffering a suspected heart attack during a legends' tournament in Berlin.

The 38-year-old – who retired after being released by the Glens at the end of the 2016-17 season – was competing for Rangers in the AOK Traditionsmasters when he suffered the cardiac event.

The Spanish striker was rushed to hospital from the Max-Schmeling-Halle Arena and underwent emergency surgery before being stabilised.

Glentoran tweeted: "Best wishes to our former player @nnovo1010 for a swift and full recovery in hospital in Berlin after taking ill after playing in a masters tournament yesterday. Speedy recovery Nacho."

Novo was competing in the tournament alongside former Gers stars like Gordon Durie, Alex Rae, Andy Goram and Jorg Albertz.

A Coruna native Novo was a journeyman striker for much of his career before joining the Gers from Dundee in 2004, and instantly became a cult hero at Ibrox.

He scored 47 goals in 179 games during a six-year spell in Glasgow before returning to his native country with Sporting Gijón in 2010.

He had spells with Legia Warsaw and Greenock Morton before signing for Glentoran ahead of the 2016-17 season.
