Watch: Irish former Manchester City youth Jack Byrne scores screamer in League One

Irish underage international Star Jack Byrne stole the headlines yesterday with a sumptuous strike for Oldham Athletic in their 5-1 demolition job over League One strugglers Northampton Town.

The cracking strike was the first of a brace for the former Manchester City youngster, who has endured a testing last few years having struggled to nail down a starting berth at both Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers after a fruitful loan spell in the Netherlands with Cambuur.

Since joining Oldham Athletic from fellow League One side Wigan on a temporary basis in August, the former St. Kevin’s Boys star has taken little time to settle with his new employers where he has racked up seven goals in 20 appearances for the Latics.

However, it will probably be this goal that will stand out the most in his enjoyable loan stint at Boundary Park.

Byrne, who picked up the ball after it came squirming out of the corner flag area of the pitch, played a one-two with Robert Hunt before he unleashed a peach of a strike which sailed past the despairing arms of Northampton Town’s goalkeeper David Cornell.

The goal set the tone for the game which saw Jack Byrne grab another alongside Obadeyi Tope (set up by Byrne), Craig Davies and Gevaro Nepomuceno which sealed an impressive win for Oldham against a sorry Northampton Town side.
