Setanta Cup: Cork City vs Drogheda Utd

Credit:

Cork City and Drogheda United renew rivalries tonight at Turners Cross as round 2 of the Setanta cup gets underway at Turners Cross tonight.

Both sides will be looking for an improvement of sorts – both Drogheda and Cork have made indifferent starts to the season. Drogheda beaten at home on the opening night by Shamrock Rovers have gone on to draw with Sligo last Saturday night. Meanwhile City have two draws to show for their league efforts – a disappointing scoreless draw at home to Bray followed up by a more encouraging draw away to Shamrock rovers on Friday night last.

However the story is somewhat different in the Setanta cup and both sides will look to maintain momentum in the competition after open day wins against teams from the Irish league.

Cork City especially will be looking to put in a good home performance after a disappointing effort against Bray, when a large crowd were hoping to be entertained. Cork’s developing rivalry with the men from Louth will ensure a bumper attendance tonight also – Matthews’ men will be keen to take advantage – and with the pressure of league points lifted from City’s shoulders – expect City to go all out attack tonight.

Drogheda for their part showed little in the way of forward invention on their last visit to Turners Cross – a nil all draw last July. However on that occasion they nearly snatched a late winner at the death. As a result, one would expect Paul Doolin’s side to employ similar tactics tonight – especially as a draw would be deemed an excellent return on a trip to Turners Cross.

Danny Murphy finishes out his 2 game Setanta Cup suspension tonight while City have injury doubts over Billy Woods and Gareth Farrelly with knee and ankle knocks respectively. Both are not expected to feature, however captain Dan Murray has recovered from a bout of flu and is expected to line up tonight.

Drogheda have doubts over the trio of Jason Gavin, Shaun Maher and Jason Barrett while long term injury concern Declan O’Brien’s recovery has fallen short of tonight’s clash but he is expected to join the squad for the weekend’s game at home to Cobh Ramblers.

This is a live TV game – and as a result, kick off is at 8.05pm.
