USA win the 2015 Algarve Cup

The Estadio Algarve hosted the 22nd edition of the Algarve Cup earlier today between the United States and France.

It was the French's first time in the Algarve Cup final as they made their debut in this year's tournament. The United States was the more experienced of the sides as they completed their target of winning their tenth Algarve Cup championship.

The United States made a lot of changes to personnel since their previous group game versus Iceland including Julie Johnston who opened the scoring on the 6th minute.

Lauren Holiday delivered a well placed ball into the head of Johnston on the six yard box and Johnston headed her first senior goal into the back of the French net.

France had a number of opportunities throughout the first half by Le Sommer and Abily but it was the United States who led 2 - 0 at the break.

France opened the second half applying a lot of pressure on the United States but failed to get on the scoreboard. Both Julie Johnston and Becky Sauerbrunn were outstanding in the United States defence blocking all angles of the French attack throughout the game.

France had an opportunity late in the game to try pull one goal back through an Amadine Henry penalty but was denied by a great saved by Hope Solo.
